Window Air Conditioner Installation Cost
By ProMatcher Staff
The cost of installing a window A/C unit will depend on a number of factors, including your geographic location and the cooling capacity of the unit you select. To find estimated prices near you, check out ProMatcher’s HVAC Cost Report. If you’re interested in finding out more about the cost of installation, take a look at our cost guide below.
1) Your geographic location. Where you live may have a larger impact on the cost of your project than you think. Material and labor prices can vary greatly between cities. You should expect to pay more than the national average in large urban centers where the cost of living is high.
2) Sizing the unit. The cooling capacity of your window air conditioner will impact the cost of the unit. The cooling capacity is typically measured in BTUs (British thermal units). For a small to medium-sized bedroom, you may only need 5,000 BTUs. In order to cool 1,500 square feet effectively, you will need about 20,000 BTUs of cooling capacity. If the unit is being installed in the kitchen or an area that experiences a lot of direct sunlight, you may want to size up the unit.
3) Insulation and weatherstripping. When installing a window A/C unit, your contractor may recommend improving the insulation of your home. This may help cut down on energy costs over time by keeping more cool air inside.
4) Energy efficiency. The energy efficiency of a window-mounted air conditioner is measured by its EER rating . The higher the EER (energy efficiency ratio) rating, the more efficiently the air conditioner will perform. High efficiency units are typically more expensive.
5) Options and upgrades. Installing a basic window air conditioner for a small bedroom should cost no more than $300 (including the unit). However, an air conditioner with lots of bells and whistles will be more expensive. For example, a unit with both heating and cooling capabilities will come at a higher price point. If major structural modifications need to be made for the air conditioner to fit, this will also increase the cost of installation as well.
